My second design assignment at university was centered around 'designing for an outcome'. Our brief was to design a lamp for a friend of family member. With the brief given to us providing little detail on what kind of lamp we had to design or the specifications it had to include, we were free to create any design we wanted. The overall design process changes slightly when designing for a specific outcome, however through interactions with my client and market research, I was able to ideate and design a lamp tailor made to my clients needs. My design statement was essentially to create a center piece for my clients living room; it needed to complement other features in the space, while also making a statement with modern/retro aesthetics. Starting with abstract drawings and evolving them into detailed CAD drawings and plans was a satisfying process, teaching me that you don't always needs a specific idea at the start of a design process. This assignment was thoroughly enjoyable and has given me some specific skills in presentation, as well as broader skills in planning and ideation.
